Chapter Ten
What just happened? Elisha closed her eyes briefly as she added milk to the other pancake ingredients. This was a bad idea. She knew it from the moment Sawyer suggestedâor should that be demandedâshe move in.
Until she fully discussed her situation with Sawyer, she hadnât grasped the full gravity of her position. Sheâd never seen Joseph as dangerous, but when heâd demanded her life savings from the bank manager, everything changed.
Trevor Hamilton had been a manager at the Tarpin Bank for as long as Elisha could remember. He was an upstanding citizen, and heâd done the right thing by her. However, according to the man himself, Joseph had threatened him when heâd refused to hand over her money.
Joseph opened his jacket to show Mr. Hamilton his Colt, but backed down when shown the other man had his own weapon. The sheriff had been called, but in his usual form, did nothing.
Elisha shuddered.
âPapa!â Gracie called as she ran into her fatherâs arms. She was such a sweet child, and Elisha would miss her when she left Silverton. The mere thought of it sent waves of sadness through her. The truth of the matter was, she needed to earn a living. Although Sawyer had asked her to stay on, Elisha didnât think it was a good idea. Especially now that sheâd been forced to live with him. Her reputation was surely ruined. She would look for a town where jobs for nannies were aplenty.
âElisha is making pancakes.â Sawyerâs voice sent waves of warmth through her, and Elisha knew for certain she had to leave. Finding herself enamored with the town sheriff was not a good idea, and she knew it. The moment all this was over, she would leave.
Her biggest regret would be losing Gracie. She didnât even want to think about how the girlâs life would change for the worse once she was gone. Elisha was certain she would go back to spending her days in the jail cell for play, and it didnât sit well with her.
Perhaps she could take Gracie with her? The moment the thought entered her mind, Elisha dismissed it. That would be kidnapping, and she had no intention of breaking the law.
She took all her frustration out on the bowl of ingredients, stirring so aggressively, they almost went over the side of the bowl. She reached for the frying pan and placed it on the heated stove. After throwing some butter into the pan, she spooned out a quantity of the pancake mixture.
The sizzling of the pancakes distracted her for only moments. Gracieâs oohs and aahâs were like salve to her ears. The little girl made her heart sing. Elishaâs heart thudded. How could she leave town knowing she would leave Gracie behind? Or Sawyer? She had become far too fond of the pair in the short time sheâd been here.
Sawyer was initially a thorn in her side, but sheâd warmed to him. Keeping his daughter in a jail cell had sent up all sorts
